Since I’m writing new software for our help desk, I find myself reading nearly every question we get. Some are routine, some are rude, some are perplexing, and some are just hilarious. Regarding the website for an online class:
[T]he video for homework 3, question 7 does not appear to be a full video. The video opens with all kinds of things written on the board and begins with the professor saying, “So the answer will be…”
Maybe that’s just the professor’s way of getting straight to the point!
They were, of course, watching a video on theonion.com at the time and couldn’t tell the difference.
College lectures, as they used to say, is the practice of getting the professor’s notes into the student’s notebook without passing through either party’s brain. But thanks to the newfangled internets, it’s the practice of getting the professor’s video into the student’s laptop without passing through either party’s brain.
In my office, we’re required — required I tellz ya — to enter something in the “solution” section of the trouble tickets. Even the most routine, the most unlikely-to-reoccur, the most ridiculous tickets must have a non-blank “solution”. I would consider this write-only-memory but someone actually does check this and sends out reminders. Or maybe a robot checks it, because stuff like “fixed it”, “resolved as per standard procedure” and “user is stupid times infinity” are all considered valid solutions.
My point is: No one should watch a video of me working.
