I suppose this colleague also believes there are, in fact, some stupid questions after all.
Thinking outside the box is actually one my annual performance evaluation criteria. (I think it’s a metaphor but to be safe, I always leave my cubical before thinking. And as an extra precaution I also leave the building.) Thinking outside the box has become so commonplace that we all should start encouraging people to think inside the box.
From my future annual review: “Exhibits conventional approach to problem-solving; uses tried-and-true techniques when faced with a new challenge; avoids innovation.” On that criteria I should get a top-notch assessment and the raise that goes with it. I’ve already spent the money!
