Long ago, when I was in high school — or, as it was known then, “second grade” — boys went too. Since then high school has become a girls only affair. Boys have higher drop out rates, get lower grades and lower SATs, and those who graduate are less likely to go to college. High school boys have left the building or have become invisible.
IMHO this phenomenon is the result of two factors. Efforts to make girls feel welcome, to raise their self-esteem, to protect them from harassment were at the boys’ expense. (The effort should have been to make students welcome, etc.) And dumb’ing down in teen sub-culture.
